The Lion’s Head Brew Bar
Lion’s Head Brew Bar has been on my list for ages! I had 2 failed attempts to try it out. First, the owner had to close it for the day – fair enough. Second time, I wanted to go on the one Tuesday they were not open – great. Try number 3 was finally successful.
I think this spot is a bit of a hidden gem that doesn’t really enjoy the popularity it deserves. That’s awesome, to be fair. Amsterdammers always love a good spot that tourists don’t know yet.
The Brew Bar is located conveniently close to De Pijp (you know, in case it’s closed and you need a plan B). The concept is: good food and good beer. It’s not exactly cheap, but the portions will fill you up and the quality is high.
All beers at Lion’s Head (except for one) are brewed right there. We tried 4 of them, all really good. Hayden was also happy with “a proper glass size”. They have a Pumpkin Pale Ale that seriously tastes like the current weather. During the summer, I’ve seen a Watermelon Weizen on their menu that I hope will come back. Not a beer fan? Don’t panic (although I am judging you), plenty of wine and cocktails available.
Lion’s Head Brew Bar is the result of a South African and German love affair, where food and beer come together beautifully.
We started the night with a bread board, because Hayden is a child and basically forgot to eat for the rest of the day. Men, eh?
The nice and fluffy bread came with 4 dips: Chutney, Chimichurri, Harissa(ish) and homemade hummus. They were all pretty delicious and we saved them for the fries – good call, follow it.
Moving on to mains, I had the Peri Peri Chicken, since you cannot find this very often on Amsterdam’s menus. The meat was really fresh and had a fair amount of spice, although I wouldn’t call it extra spicy. This was also my first encounter with kale! I know! It just sounds so unappetizing that I always kept away from it. Truth is, it ain’t bad, but not my first choice either. In this case, it came with fries so not an issue. Overall very satisfied with this dish that I barely managed to almost finish.
Hayden had the Steak Burger, which looked extra juicy and delicious. I liked the simplicity of it (none of those 485857385 toppings burgers) and the high quality. Definitely my kind of burger.
4 beers and way too much food later, we were both breathing heavily and having trouble standing up. Thank God this country forces you to work out a bit on your way home, damn.
Very happy with our visit to the Lion’s Head Brew Bar. Even though it took 3 tries, it was worth it, and it’s a spot that I definitely will add to my “De Pijp beer and food crawl”. Their beers change occasionally and I still have to try their Nachos and Mussels. The online menu is not updated, so there’s a few things you won’t find there.
Give The Lion’s Head Brew Bar a try, and tell your friends – but not all of them, seriously, let’s keep it casual.
