Restaurant Luna

If you live (or have been) in Amsterdam you know that the city is packed with Argentinian restaurants / steak houses. Sadly, a lot of them are nowhere near as good as you’d hope, and are so called “tourist traps”. I’ve heard for a while from here and there that Restaurant Luna truly is an exception, like an actual part of Argentina in the heart of Amsterdam.

Last weekend Hayden’s parents came to visit us. It was their first time in Amsterdam and have had a long, long trip so the pressure was on. Mission was to find a place nearby (in Jordaan), yummy and which offered decent portions. That’s when I decided to give Restaurant Luna a go – after all, the Texans would not have said no to steak.

Together with our drinks, we got complimentary bread with garlic, herbs, butter and olive oil.

Hayden’s parents went with the recommendations and ordered the medium portions of Argentinian beef tenderloin (200 gr.) They paired it with the classic fries and mayo, and a nice bottle of organic red wine.

Beef Tenderloin

The beef was cooked exactly as indicated, and they claimed it was one of the best steaks they have ever had. Now, I hope you understand what that means coming from Dallas…they really liked the fries, too! I, for one, was not very impressed by them.

I got myself a nice piece of medium Entrecôte (also 200 gr.). It was cooked perfectly and there was no sign of greasy parts, which is important to me when ordering steak.

Entrecôte

Hayden opted for the Brochette and was more than happy with his choice, as he basically got to taste four different meats for the same price – thus if you cannot make up your mind, I would suggest to go with this one. What you see below is a mix of beef tenderloin, rib-eye, entrecôte and lamb.

We had their house wine, which I believe was good for the price and paired well with the dish.

Unfortunately there was no room left for dessert in our bellies. Next time!

Overall, a great experience at Luna Restaurant. On Friday nights you can also enjoy some live music which adds to the overall atmosphere. Music is not too loud, you can still have a nice conversation. The place is small, make sure to make a reservation. On weekend nights, prepare to wait a fair bit for your order.
