Seems like the end of the summer is coming with “parents are visiting” season. After taking Hayden’s parents out for a great steak at Restaurant Luna, I’ve decided to take mine at Restaurant Vlaming, a family owned business. I was looking for the true gezellig feeling that the dutchies always talk about, and of course, for good food – you know, the main point.
I have found what I was looking for – a very intimate, tiny place, packed, but with a happy vibe. The menu does not give much choice, but the quality makes up for it. Besides, the 4 choices for mains will pretty surely suit your companions: there is steak, there is tuna, there is a burger, and there is vegetarian risotto. Either way, do not forget to have a look on the mirror for the daily specials!
After spending some hours at Foodhallen and Bierfabriek earlier that day, we had to skip the starters. My mom and I both had the Spanish Tuna Steak, covered in sesame seeds. As sides, we shared their stir fried sugar snaps, green beans and mushrooms, and their veggie special for the day, broccoli and cauliflower in a “slightly spicy” sauce. The tuna steak was brilliant, so I enjoyed every single bite of it; maybe a bit too slow, as by the end, it got cold.
The veggie sides were also good, but not impressive – very similar to what I usually make myself (or am I just a really good cook?!). The cauliflower and broccoli were not spicy at all, in my opinion.
Dad and Hayden had the Seared Rumpsteak with Homemade “lazy women” fries (haha). I did not hear much from them while they were having their meal, so I will take it as a good sign. I have asked Hayden what is the “verdict”, and he went as far as saying this may be the best steak he had in Amsterdam just yet – “so tender, you don’t even need a knife”! The fries were not too oily, and tasted great and fresh.
We all shared a bottle of Rueda of Mirambeau (Rose) and thought it went great with our meal choices, but if you want to make a sure call, the staff is more than happy to assist. Moreover, there are wine suggestions on the menu for each dish.
While my parents were saving themselves for one of the cakes that brought to me from Romania, Hayden and I shared a Sticky Toffee Pie (I’ll admit, I was previously told I have to try it). Glad I did – nothing like a pie, but a delicious, delicious cake. Warm chocolate melting in my mouth, mixing with vanilla ice-cream? YES, PLEASE. Thus, recommending further – you have to try it!
All in all a pleasant experience, fit for the occasion – we all left happy and full. Make sure to make a reservation if you’d like to visit on weekends!
