Pinto’s Mama Thai Cuisine
This week was one of those “salads and wraps for dinner”, which is doable only if you throw some real food there in the middle of it. Last night I coupled up with my favorite foodie, Irina, and went all the way to Zuid to try this new Thai place: Pinto’s Mama Thai Cuisine.
I will admit that the great deal they put on Social Deal is how I got to know about them. Did a bit of research and read only good things, so I’ve decided to check if this is indeed the new place to be when it comes to Thai food.
We got there around 7 PM. The place looks very modern and welcoming, you can tell it’s brand new. All the lovely ladies working there are wearing traditional clothing and look simply beautiful. They were very warm and friendly towards us. If you go out often in Amsterdam, you know that’s rare.
The coupon we had included a 3 course dinner, more than 70 choices – honestly, it’s probably the best deal I’ve ever found using Social Deal or similar services. I would love to tell you all about the different dishes Irina and I tried, but you’ll have to read about what we had. See, we’re so similar when it comes to food, we ended up ordering the same things.
To start with, we had the Tom Kha Kai – a Thai chicken soup with coconut milk, champignions and coriander. I do wish there was more of that. The soup was delicious, and packed with flavors. Keep in mind that if you don’t really like the taste of coconut, this is probably not for you, as this flavor tends to take over the dish.
For the main, we had Plaa muk shoe shie, squid in a red curry with coconut milk, sweet basil and veggies. This dish was also packed with flavors and I enjoyed every bite. The portion was perfect for me (yes, I eat a lot), especially after the starter. The texture of the curry was a bit too watery for my taste, and I could have used more rice for the amount of curry. Eh, maybe that’s just being used to always receiving massive amounts of rice in Asian restaurants.
We finished the meal with some good old ice cream to cool down after the warm meals.
We drank some Thai beers for the sake of keeping it completely authentic. I’m kidding, we couldn’t find the wine on the menu, and we realized they serve wine too late. Oops.
The food at Pinto’s Mama is definitely a treat for your taste buds. What my taste buds were not so happy about was the lack of spiciness. I expect Thai food to make me sweat a bit, some heavy breathing here and there. I understand that they need to adapt to what the Dutch call spicy, but I was looking for that sweet vs spicy battle. It was rather sweet.
Overall a great experience at this new Thai spot – worth the money with or without a coupon. The menu offers a very large variety of options. They put a lot of effort into service, presentation and overall atmosphere. I mean, have you seen that flower on my curry?!
We had a great night and I will definitely put Pinto’s Mama Thai Cuisine on my food delivery list (Zuid seems far from Jordaan during winter, brr.).
