What’s up, Amsterdammers? Has anyone else noticed that if you’re trying to find a new food spot in the city, they’re all French? Don’t get me wrong, I love me some French cuisine, but how many bistros can we take?

Anyway – I was looking for something completely different for our recent date night, so we ended up at Miri Mary: Indian food with a modern, fancy twist. Sign me up!

Miri Mary has also been pretty popular on my Insta feed, with some bloggers claiming to “go back for the third time in a month”.

The concept is shared plates. Most dishes are of medium size, so it’s probably more food than you expect. We were first advised to get 3–4 plates per person, and were happy we didn’t do that. We got 5 dishes in total, and left absolutely full.

Besides their unique approach – “bringing pepper, India’s favorite spice, and the western world together around a table” – Miri Mary is also famous for their cocktails! Similar to their dishes, they took classics and gave them a twist. I started off with Miri’s Margarita, and for maybe the first time ever in Amsterdam, a spicy Margarita was…spicy! And delicious.

My second drink, Pearl, was recommended by them: gin with bergamot, lemon, basil and a hint of violets. This truly was a special cocktail, and the aromas mixed just right.

On to the food! First, we got the sweet potato samosas, and the mushrooms with saffron cream. Hayden loooooves his samosas, and said these may be the best he’s ever had, which is HIGH praise. I liked them as well, I’m just not the-ultimate-samosa-judge.

The mushrooms, however, were my favorite dish by far. They were simply perfect: smokey and full of flavor from the tandoor oven, swimming in a very well-balanced saffron cream. A masterpiece of a dish.

Next, we tried their roasted vegetables with coconut rice cakes. None of us were really impressed with this one, just tasted like something I can easily make at home with some tomato sauce. Not the greatest.

Next, we had the stuffed peppers in a peanut sauce. Really liked this one, though we both struggled to taste the peanuts in the sauce. Maybe our brains are too set on satay to taste anything more subtle? Good dish, great sauce to go with our garlic naan!

Lastly, we shared the butter chicken. I’m a sucker for butter chicken, it’s one of my favorite comfort foods, and this was a good one. Our only issues was that – at this point – we were really full! Happy full, though. Happy bellies.

All in all, we’ve had a great date night at Miri Mary and would love to be back and try their brunch menu. The tables are small, so we appreciated that they don’t bring the plates all at once and let you deal with that. Service was great and people were very friendly – a “good vibes” place. Not sure if I’ll go 3 times in a month, but I’d happily recommend it and go back for Indian brunch & cocktails.
