Louie Louie
There were times when I’ve wondered…is it worth going all the way to East to try out Louie Louie? Then I’ve checked their website, where the menu was split between “day day”, “evening evening”, “drinks drinks” – and I’ve decided that’s pretty funny. I’ll go.
Fast forward to last Saturday, I’ve finally managed to pay them a visit over brunch, catching up with a friend that used to be my foodie partner when we worked together. I knew not much changed when she asked me “so what are we eating?” 2 minutes after I sat down. Loved that.
To start off the brunch, we’ve ordered classics: Bloody Marys. This is one of my favorite drinks, but I’ve seen it be messed up multiple times, so I never know what to expect. Louie Louie makes a pretty good one, though! I was happy with it and probably finished it a bit too early? No, no such thing. Thought so.
My friend Lana order another. That’s worth a couple of golden stars.
After a quick scan of the menu, I’ve decided to get the Croque Louie Louie, with avocado, jalapeno, koriander and cheese (obviously). Pretty sure that if you’re having a vegetarian brunch, you’re doing some sort of healthy, self care. Ot at least that’s what I tell to myself.
I was happy with my choice! The bread was nice and crunchy, the whole meal wasn’t dry and it didn’t lack taste. It wasn’t something mind-blowing or that I’d run back to necessarily, but it hit the spot. Similar to the ones I’ve recently had in Paris.
Lana had the Cubano Sandwich, with procureur (pork shoulder), pulled pork (more pork), bacon (shall I go on?), tomatillo, provolone cheese, coriander mustard and chipotle. An explosion of aromas, really. The right ingredients were there, but it could’ve been juicier. Lana fought her way through a massive portion that she almost finished, but did expect it to be cheesier. I guess the provolone wasn’t exactly shining through all the pork bits.
Before leaving the cocktail part of the menu, I also tried their Sangria Superior, because I’m a sucker for white, bubbly sangria. It’s a blessing and a curse.
We washed everything down with a blond beer from their neighbours at De Eeuwige Jeugd, and then moved on with our lives. To the next bar. De Eeuwige Jeugd brewery, 3 houses down.
All in all, good brunching at Louie Louie. The quality was good but not phenomenal, however, the prices were below Amsterdam average, with each of our mains costing 10 EUR. I like their concept of an all-day cafe, with a menu that varies from fruit bowls, to tacos or ramen. Worth a visit!
