Italian

La Trattoria Di Donna Sofia

A couple of weeks ago, Hayden and I wore on the hunt for an Italian dinner. Thankfully, there are millions of options in Amsterdam, with a new one popping up every week (or so). But, that also means that you need to filter through, especially since a dinner at an Italian restaurant in Amsterdam is usually not a cheap night out. After hours of research through all the names, I’ve landed on La Trattoria Di Donna Sofia.

It’s been around for about 10 years, and it’s located on one of my favorite streets in Amsterdam. I’ve passed this quaint little spot in Jordaan many times, but never stopped by – so, about time.

Hayden and I got a bottle of red wine, which wasn’t fantastic. It kinda tasted like a mid-shelf Albert Heijn choice.

We’ve shared an appetizer, the burrata with vegetables. It was light, flavorful, and a good start to the meal.

Next up, the main(s) show! I went with what a classic love of mine, that I’d choose off every menu: the ricotta filled sage butter ravioli. These were divine, and definitely met my expectations – happy belly, happy soul. Alllmoooost as good as the ones at Ceppi’s.

I actually bought a bag of fresh sage the next day. Since then, I surprised myself with the amount of dishes that sage butter / olive oil can be added to. My lunch falafel wraps are much better now.

Hayden got the papardelle ragú, and he seemed happy enough with it, but not impressed. I tried it too, and it didn’t knock me off my feet. I’ll be honest, I’m such a sucker for white sauce pasta, or classics like al limone, aglio e olio…that I’m rarely impressed by red sauce pasta.

To end our dinner, we each ordered dessert. Obviously. Hayden got his favorite, the classic, Tiramisu. He said it might be up there with one of the best ones. That is high praise in Mr.-I-love-Tiramisu’s book. I had the Sgroppino (a lemon sorbet based drink, with mint, prosecco and vodka). It was refreshing and delicious. I haven’t had millions of those before, so can’t say if it was the best out there, but it sure was tasty.

Desserts at La Trattoria Di Donna Sofia

To sum things up, we’ve had a good time at La Trattoria Di Donna Sofia. It was intimate, and fit for a date night. However, the service wasn’t great. We’ve had to wave down the staff a couple of times, which I wouldn’t expect at this sort of restaurant. We didn’t get a dessert menu until we’ve asked for one, even though they were still serving food / new guests.

I was also a bit surprised to find a different menu at the restaurant compared to the one on the website, and more importantly, different prices. For this specific night, I was looking for something on the more affordable side of things. We’ve had the same dishes for less money in Amsterdam, and in my opinion, they were better.

I’d come back to La Trattoria Di Donna Sofia if around, especially compared to their neighbors at Assaggi (which was once a 10 in my book, but a lot has changed in that kitchen). It hasn’t, however, made my top list.
