Hannah’s
Recently, our date nights became date brunches, in between bar hops, on lazy Saturdays. It’s a nice temporary change, that gives me the chance to visit some lunch spots that have been on my list – like Hannah’s.
You’ll find this cozy spot in West. The food is inspired by Mediterranean flavors, so expect anything from Italian, to Spanish, Marrocan or Portuguese. They want to be an inclusive place (for reasons I’ll mention below), so they decided the food should be too. Why just one country? I mean, I get it.
Hannah’s is a pretty special place, run by Laura, who opened it out of love for:
- her sister, Hannah, who has a mental disability
- good food and good drinks
The restaurant aims to give a space to people who cannot be part of paid employment, due to different disabilities they may have. However, they are able, and willing, to participate in society and learn. While taking care of her sister, Laura realized that there are very few day time activities to enjoy that are related to catering. That’s why Hannah’s is a place where some can participate, or some can just hang out and enjoy a cup of coffee without any judgment for being “different”. It’s a place for all and everyone.
From the moment you walk in and read a couple of things around the restaurant, you understand you’re in a special spot – one with a mission, and a whole lot of heart put into it. So if you’re ever looking for a place that’s more than…a place…maybe look this one up.
Alright – on to the food!
I’ve had the ceviche. To be honest, it’s hard for me to pass any ceviche on a menu, unless I’m starving or it’s big dinner time. The raw fish was cured in a citrusy leche de tigre. The dish comes with pickled tomatoes, carrots, and fresh bread to dip into herb oil. It was light, tangy, delicious and very summery. Yes, I refuse to believe it’s autumn. Not the prettiest dish, but a tasty one nevertheless.
Hayden had the brioche brisket, which is pretty self explanatory: slow cooked beef brisket. It came with a couple of fresh veggies, and harissa mayo. I’ve had a bite and can attest that it was delicious. He said it was “pretty good brisket”, but he just had brisket at Pendergast that week. Therefore, it’s fair to say he was still high on the “best brisket ever”.
We’ve had a lovely lunch at Hannah’s, with more reasonable prices than you’ll usually find in Amsterdam nowadays. The menu has other lunch classics as shakshuka, all sorts of omelets, a fancy burrata or turmeric pancakes. On weekends, they serve dinner too.
I would definitely visit this place: good food, and a special raison d’etre.
