Gs
I am an absolute sucker for brunch. I never knew much about this concept (other than what Sex and the City taught me) before having an American partner…now, I can’t even imagine Sundays without it.
Most times we tend to put together our own brunch, but about once a month we’ll go out there and see what Amsterdam has to offer.
Last week I was craving Greenwoods, but I soon found out their Singel location does not serve alcohol…I was looking for brunch not breakfast, so I ended up at Gs, a name that sounded familiar, but could not place it. Realized after that they have the famous Brunch Boat! That’s for another day…
Their slogan is a really nice place. Well, it is! With their menus on records and their funky table covers, they’ve won me over pretty quick.
I started, as I always do, with a good old mimosa. I can honestly say that it’s one of the best I’ve had in Amsterdam (better than the ones I make, sadly…help?!), and one of the most affordable (5 EUR). The orange juice is freshly squeezed, and the prosecco – OJ ratio was on point.
I went for the healthier version of brunch this time and had their habibi dish, thus not the most traditional. It consists of two scrambled eggs, served with halloumi, yogurt, fresh veggies and pita bread. The food was very tasty and light, I could have probably had a whole other portion…I was however saving myself for some cocktails!
Hayden had the benny henny, two poached eggs served on crispy chicken with spinach and hollandaise sauce. The brunch expert was happy with his choice. The chicken was very nicely cooked, crispy on the outside, nice and tender on the inside, and the eggs were not watery, something that I’ve seen quite often when it comes to poached eggs (not to be confused with runny – that’s a good thing in my book).
As the hours went by, we ended up trying their Pimms, Passion in the morning and Mezcal pink lemonade. My personal favorite was the Mezcal pink lemonade (which I forgot to take a picture of, smart me). It has a very smokey taste / after taste, so it may not be for everyone. Can be compared with an Old Fashion, but easier to drink. All the drinks we tried were delicious.
I’ve had a great brunch and Gs and I am sure I will return. They also have an impressive menu dedicated only to Bloody Marry’s…while Hayden is not a big fan, I’d love to try some that make me wonder “they put what in there?”.
I was also peaking at other people’s orders, and seen some impressive portions of waffles with bacon and all kinds of deliciousness…so I think next time, I’m going all in and dirty, crispy bacon and Bloody Marry’s!
