I’ll be honest, Geflipt was not my first choice last night. I was heading to Lion’s Head Brew Bar, a place that has long been on my list. However, the one time I made it all the way to Van Woustraat (I walked – how undtuch of me), the owner had to close the bar for the night due to unforeseen circumstances. Bummer. At 8PM, panic spread and I was desperately browsing my list for a nearby place.

Geflipt came to mind, since the guys from Forkoff recently said they have the best burgers in Amsterdam. Now, that’s a bold claim in a city with millions of choices for…usually average burgers.

Walked in, sat down at the window bar – yay, people watching! and waited. My welcome was a bit weird, because the waiter came by and asked me “do you want something?” – yeah, pretty much why I’m here. Anyway, moving on, soon enough I was enjoying a cold local beer and trying to decide which burger to choose.

Geflipt does not give you many choices, and that’s good. I’m a fan of doing things well rather than doing a little something for everyone. There’s a basic burger, a spicy burger, a vegan one, a chicken one, and their newest addition: a Mexican burger. Why exactly does anyone feel the need to have nachos in their burger is beyond me, but I guess there’s a market out there.

I ordered their spicy option, called Vurig. Besides the 180g beef patty, toppings included homemade spicy chutney, golden cheddar, madame jeanette mayonnaise and jalapenos. Let’s break this down.

The bun was good, but the lower one was just a bit too soft/mushy for me. That’s probably a personal preference, though. I was happy to be able to cut it in half without everything spilling everywhere.

The chutney was very nice, spicy as promised (you know, Dutch levels considered) and not sweet (thank God). Everything combined beautifully, although I would have let the jalapenos out of this one. The strong taste was taking over, and it’s a shame, since the spicy chutney does the job just well. The beef patty was perfectly cooked, and I’m ready to say – probably the best one I’ve had in Amsterdam.

Hayden went with the classic, the Geflipt burger: Gasconne beef (180 g), crispy bacon, golden cheddar, homemade red onion compote, geflipt sauce and a fried egg. Honestly, I was very focused on my own burger and may have forgotten to ask for a bite. We’ll have to trust him on this one.

He says that the burger is good, but he’s a loyal fan of Gollem’s burger. I’m a big fan of their fries (seriously, DO TRY THEM). Sometimes, “it’s good” is all I can get out of Texas boy…

The guys at Geflipt warned us that sharing one portion of fries is enough, and they were right. We chose…well, I chose the truffle fries because honestly, I’ll go for truffle anything.

Truffle fries

Crispy, tasty, and an apart taste given by the truffle aioli. No fries survived the attack; they never do.

We asked for the check and told the waiter I heard they have the best burgers in Amsterdam. He said he believes so, since everything comes in fresh every morning.

Skipping through the awkward “do you want something” question, beers came fast and so did our burgers. Plus points for that.

I had quite high expectations for Geflipt and I was not disappointed. Best burger in town? I don’t think I’ve explored that scene enough to make such a statement. Therefore, I’ll give them “best patty I’ve tried so far”. I will happily bring any burger lover here, it’s a safe and smart choice.
