Feed Amsterdam
Here’s to another spot that got lost on my way-too-long list, until Simon, the lovely owner, messaged me. Feed Amsterdam’s ads reached me a while ago, and was already planning on trying out their brunch menu. Let’s be honest, Australian and NZ spots do it best around here. However, I ended up paying them a visit to try their new dinner menu!
Feed Amsterdam is located a bit off the beaten track, but that means quick service and a spot on their beautiful terrace. The space combines food, music and community. You definitely get an edgy vibe from it.
To kick-off the meal, we shared some fritters, as Simon recommended. We had some crispy cauliflower & broccoli, tempura prawns & crabs, together with some classic buttermilk fried chicken wings. Interestingly enough, the veggie fritters were my favorite – they somehow made them taste delicious? Chicken was great too, the seafood part of this platter was a bit less impressive.
They came with 3 dips, out of which my favorite was their homemade raita: super refreshing, and it greatly balanced the deep-fried food.
On to the next! Feed Amsterdam has a pretty impressive menu of mains, varying from pork ribs, risotto, pasta and many (delicious sounding) burgers. We wanted to keep it light and went with their special: mackerel meunière served with roasted potatoes and sautéed vegetables.
This dish was divine. The fish was covered in brown butter (can never go wrong with butter), while capers and lemons balanced it out. Truly, a perfect, seasonal dish. Could’ve had seconds.
But I didn’t, because…contrary to popular belief, desserts also need to go into the same stomach. Very disappointing, I know. So do the beers and wine, by the way, in case you were wondering.
For dessert, we split 2 of their new additions: a white chocolate-banana blondie, and a coconut cake with homemade sorbet. The blondie was the winner here for me, a bit more….dessert-y? I’d definitely go with that one. I think the coconut cake was the healthier choice, but we’re not eating desserts to stick to our diets, surely.
We washed everything down with a couple of white and rosé glasses. Simon recommended us a couple of options, and even let us have a taste, so we can choose our favorites. My friend ended up with a Chardonnay, that even I liked, and I despise Chardonnays. I went with my known companion…a light rosé from Provence.
All in all, we’ve had a great time at Feed Amsterdam. Simon used to run Drovers Dog in the same location. I think it’s one of those places that offer a great value for money, yet still a bit unknown. My heavenly fish main was 17,50 EUR on their specials’ menu; a good fish main for under 20 EUR in Amsterdam is rare to say the least.
They also do comedy nights, and foodie themed days/nights: think Sunday roasts, brunches on weekends, and Chicken Parma Thursdays! If you’re around the area, pay them a visit. I’m confident that no matter what you go for: brunch, dinner, or drinks…you’ll be happy to stop by.
*Full-disclosure, Feed Amsterdam invited us to try their menu, and we haven’t paid for our food.
