I have a dream – that one day, brunch will be such a basic thing here in Amsterdam, that places will need to compete and do the American “$1 mimosas” and such deals. It will take a while, sigh. Meanwhile, going out for brunch every weekend would be preeeetty expensive. When it happens, I want it to be good. Seriously, don’t waste my time or money on a Sunday. Thank God, Cut Throat did not.
The place portrays itself as a barber shop, bar and restaurant, A cool concept. On Sundays, they have a DJ mixing old school hip-hop tunes, which creates a really nice atmosphere.
Before anything else, I am going to say that Cut Throat has the best brunch in Amsterdam. Period. Yeah, fight me.
Secondly, it is incredibly underestimated due to their lack of…fame? I knew about it cause I constantly research food spots, as you may imagine. However, for the average person who is going to invest 1 minute into looking for a brunch spot, Cut Throat will rarely be the chosen one. A shame.
What brought me here was seeing a pretty interesting item on their menu: the Red Velvet Waffles with Friend Chicken. Honestly, if you put waffles and (good) fried chicken together, I’m yours. Now, if you make those red velvet waffles…eh, I’ll probably marry you or something (sorry, Hayden).
The waffles exceeded my expectations. The portion was big, the chicken was well fried and crispy, the warm caramel sauce on top just tied everything together. Only complaints: bacon could be a tiny bit thicker (American style), waffles could be a bit puffier. Overall, better than my previous favorites at G’s.
Hayden chose the Huevo Rancheros with Fried Chicken and this one just blew our minds. There were so, so many flavors in here, we did not even know how to react. The salsa on its own was a work of art. The bean chili and guacamole were fabulous too. The sour cream “washed down” the spiciness, and the fried chicken….well, that’s an unusual addition to the dish, but why would you say no to more fried chicken? Absolutely delicious. Dallas man said it may be one of the best he’s ever had. Bold one. Only remark: maybe more than one egg?
I enjoyed a Bloody Mary that was large enough to not need another drink – unusual for me, really. Hayden had a Gin Sour. Pitchers are also available for Bloody Marys or Mimosas.
We both left full and happy. I mean it, it was hard to breathe after that amount of food. Normally I know when to take the rest to go, but I could not stop eating.
We found our happy place for Sundays. Heard good things about the burgers too, and after having an amazing Mexican dish, I feel courageous enough to try their Nachos. They may be…actual nachos, you know?
While not cheap, Cut Throat is worth every penny. The food quality (for brunch) is superior to most Amsterdam spots. Kudos to you, Cut Throat – you have my heart, if I may have your food. I don’t usually give 10’s, but here’s yours.
