Casa Di David

Last week we celebrated Hayden landing a cool, exciting new job! Naturally, that means we’ve been spending way too much money on loads of food, drinks and covered it with “f*ck it, we’re celebrating”. The celebration week ended with a slightly fancier date night at Casa Di David.

When it comes to Italian cuisine in Amsterdam, Casa Di David is a known name. It has been around for almost 40 years and it holds tight of its traditions. For example, Nicoletta Gezzi always has been and still is the head of the restaurant. It takes a lot to take me away from my favorite pizza place , so I just wanted to try Casa Di David’s pasta.

It’s worth noting that the place has a slight reputation for slow service or customers being ignored – at least that’s what you’ll get scrolling through reviews. I am however happy to report that our experience was nothing like that. We were sat down quickly, our wine followed shortly and we had no problems getting the staff’s attention whenever we needed to. To make sure you don’t encounter issues, please make a reservation.

Alright, now on to food, since that’s why you’re here. Whenever I go out, I try to eat whatever I can’t make at home – after all, I’m paying at least double the price of a homemade dinner. At Casa Di David, that was tagliolini with burrata, black truffles and wild spinach. Needless to say, I’m a sucker for truffles.

It has totally met my expectations, which were high. Been dreaming about this for like…4 days in advance. The tagliolini were creamy and the truffles were just enough to not have an overwhelming taste – more than you see in that picture, yes. The burrata could have been just a bit softer, thus easier to mix. The taste was simply amazing. The portion was just enough. Did not leave hungry, but no food baby either.

Hayden chose the rigatoni with beef tenderloin in a sauce of chianti and red onion. Unfortunately he was not very impressed with the dish, and neither was I. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t bad – you could tell the ingredients were of high quality. However, the taste did not impress and neither the texture of the tenderloin, which was pretty rough. Hayden said he could have made that too.

To make up for it, we had a tiramisu for desert, one of his favorites. He liked that and really liked my pasta. Hayden always likes my food more. Literally, every time. He needs to make better decisions.

We washed everything down with a house red wine, which was better than expected. Of course, all their wines are Italian.

Rating Casa Di David is probably the hardest call; my dish was excellent, Hayden’s wasn’t anywhere near. Therefore, I cannot vouch for their whole menu, but I can tell you one thing, if you like truffles – go, go, go for that truffle tagliolini. You won’t leave disappointed. The experience made me think that their white sauce pasta may be superior to the red sauce one, but this is only an assumption. Maybe just more outstanding.

All in all, I do recommend Casa Di David. Hell, even Hayden recommended it to his colleagues only a week later. I do not recommend the rigatoni with beef tenderloin. As for the rest of their menu…maybe I’ll hear from you one day.
