Cannibale Royale

Cannibale Royale is an absolute classic in Amsterdam. Well known for its variation of meats, many will recommend it to you if you’re looking for a good steak. It recently opened a new location on Rozengracht and I am more than excited to have it so close to me. Needless to say, I had to pay it a visit.

A week ago I grabbed some friends and headed to Cannibale Royale for Hayden’s birthday dinner. I love sharing dinners with more people, as I get to comment here on more than 2 dishes.

When you walk in, don’t expect your usual decor. Nothing nice and chill about this place, with heads hanging around or faceless paintings (cannibale, got it?). It stands out and I appreciate that.

Started my night with a Cannibale Royale beer (yes, they make their own and it’s a good one), and looked through the menu. The super nice waitress explained the specials to us – more than once – and we’ve decided to give them a go.

Hayden and I had their Steak of the Moment/Season, which was a just greasy and chewy enough rib eye with Chimichurri. The steak melted in my mouth and was perfectly cooked. I have no complaints, and neither did Hayden.

Extra point – they give you appropriate knives, so you don’t have to embarrass yourself trying to cut your food – I hate that.

What you see on the side are a couple of pickled onions, so keep in mind that proper sides are to be ordered separately. And that’s pretty cool, because I love their options! Think mac’n cheese, grilled corn, watermelon and feta salad or crispy garlic broccoli. Yes, yes, you can also just stick with the fries.

We went for the broccoli and the mac’n cheese, enjoyed both. The latter would have been too much for me, next to a steak…but Hayden’s fat ass handled it just fine.

My friend also chose one of the seasonal options, a burger that contains…honestly, would have had to take immediate notes to remember. It took a long time to explain, I can tell you that. See below. The beef patty was covered in bacon, there was loads of cheese, veggies and a crunchy padron pepper (?) on top.

She was just telling us how she can never finish a meal by herself …well, she did this time. Magic. It looked to kill for. It also looked like it could kill you, though.

Last but not least, Cannibale’s favorite ribs. I’m personally not a big fan of ribs, but look how shiny and juicy these look! Haven’t tried them, but there were 0 leftovers here too, so I’ll trust that sign.

Cannibale Royale remains one of the kings / queens (it’s 2019 and I want to be inclusive) of good steaks in Amsterdam. No wonder they have 5 locations and going strong. A French Brasserie that focuses on quality and knows what it’s doing. I am more than confident to recommend this to you – dig in, foodies!
