Yesterday we’ve decided to have a friends night instead of date night. My lame friends however did not want to go where I wanted to go, so I had to get…creative. Looking for good drinks, decent food, a good atmosphere for a group and a decent bill – after all, it’s December and we all know Christmas activities can get expensive. I looked and looked, searched and searched, ended up at a familiar place – Cafe Broer.

What I already knew about Cafe Broer is that no one will have trouble finding a couple of good beers. Personally, I’m a big fan of their own beer, which is really smooth and slightly sweet. I had food at Cafe Broer before too, but nothing that blew my mind enough to remember.

The night started with the Jalapeno Poppers which do go amazingly well with the beers, if you’re up for a bit of spiciness. We shared, as you do …but I would have happily eaten all of them. The Jalapenos are filled with cream cheese and cheddar, mmmm. You have the choice to wrap those bad boys in bacon too!

After changing my mind 10 times, I ordered the kangaroo steak, medium rare. The steak was indeed what I call medium rare and very, very juicy. I was a fan of it – now I must admit that I haven’t tried the kangaroo at Coco’s or Drovers, so I can not yet advise you if this is the place to be if you’re looking for kangaroo meat. The steak came with a nice, sticky red wine sauce and carrots on the side. There are tiny pieces of crispy Pancetta in the sauce, but you cannot really taste those.

One of my friends had Half A Chicken, which looked pretty tasty! The picture for this one terribly failed due to…bar lighting. He seemed pretty happy with his chicken and finished all of it – which looked like a lot of meat to me.

Hayden and my other friend had the Black Angus Burger – and here the controversy begins. Now, Hayden has had a lot of his burgers in his life, and has some sort of standards when it comes to a good one. He rated it as a “pretty good burger”, with a 7/10. My friend, on the other hand, ate only half of it and said it’s not good at all. Bear in mind that their toppings differed. Also bear in mind that most reviews you’ll read about the burger at Cafe Broer are very positive. So…I guess we’ll meet in the middle and call it “ok”? One thing I can tell you is that the fried onions are the flakes you’d find in a bag in a supermarket.

Black Angus Burger

All in all, I would still recommend Cafe Broer for a nice, casual dinner with your friends in the West. The bill will be friendly, your stomach will be filled with good beer and I personally cannot complain about the food either. I have been there a couple of times and I will surely return – as a nice plus, they have board games, and a very cute summer terrace (for whenever that time may come again…).
