SEO tells me to start by mentioning my keyword in this paragraph or something, but screw it. WELCOME BACK EVERYONE, OH MY GOD, IT’S BEEN SO LONG AND I MISSED RESTAURANTS, JUDGING FOOD, DATE NIGHTS AND ALL OF YOU!

I hope you’re all safe and didn’t lose your mind over the “relaxed” lockdown we had here in Amsterdam. I’ve had some fun times together with Hayden during the past months, but I’m happy to be one step closer to normal life. There’s something about draft beer and food that requires zero effort from your side.

On the 1st of June, I got up early, showered, dressed up and went “camping” in front of my local bar. After a couple of beers, it was time for food. I kinda forgot that you can’t just casually walk into a restaurant nowadays, and of course we had no reservations made. Smart, eh?

However, we called Biertuin and they told us to come anyway – “it’s not that crazy”. Turns out, that meant we were literally the only ones there. A weird sight to see for a (usually) busy place.

If you’re not familiar with Biertuin, well, it’s kinda in the name and then again not. Here’s what I mean…

Biertuin has a nice menu with plenty of beer choices, some wine if you’re gonna be that guy, and bar food to keep you going. The confusing part is that the “tuin” is actually an inside room, and their outside space is really just 2 tables. Hmm.

I’ve visited them plenty of times. I had the nachos, some of their bites and a very generous portion of Rendang Fries which I remember being quite pleased with. This time, I went for a “healthy” (???) option: half a chicken! Don’t judge, I’m trying.

Half a chicken at Biertuin

The chicken was nicely spiced and juicy. It says it comes with a variety of sauces, which is a bit misleading. It comes with 2 sauces, one is mayo and one is bbq. I guess I was expecting something a bit more sophisticated, that doesn’t come directly from a bottle. So yay for chicken, nay for sauces. And an extra point for that giant knife, ’cause I truly hate places that give you a miniature knife to struggle with throughout your meal.

Speaking of healthy options, Hayden and my friend didn’t choose one. They went for burgers, which is very understandable. On day 1 of being out and about, is there anything like burgers and beers?

My friend had the cheeseburger, which I guess I don’t have to explain to you. He went with a classic, and enjoyed it.

Hayden had the “look at me, I’m so extra” version of that, which was the El Gordon Mexican burger. It was good, juicy and filling – way too filling. See, one would assume that the pork belly is the patty, but one would be wrong. This super extra burger comes with your average beef patty, and theeeen adds the pork belly. Thank me later for this valuable information.

After all this food, the beers, and the “fries to share”, we all struggled to crawl home. Although this was lunch, neither of us had dinner that day. So I guess great value for money, then?

Biertuin is a great place for groups when looking to have a couple of nice beers and bar food. Of course, the big groups option is not exactly working out nowadays, but something to keep in mind. The food is nice and affordable – just keep in mind that the portions are generous and the burgers are REALLY heavy. This isn’t the greatest culinary trip you’ll ever experience – but Biertuin in general checks all the boxes for your average day / night out.

If you’re looking for the higher end version of a similar concept, head to Cannibale Royale.
