BEER Loves FOOD
To be fair, beer loves food indeed. The thing is, most of the time it’s what takes me to a kebab shop at 2AM. This time, Fancy Pants Me and Mr. Same ended up at an actual bistro, as they call it. Also, no I am not screaming at you – it’s how their name is supposed to be spelled.
When 2019 started, Hayden and I decided we need to see more live music. One of the best things we’ve done is get a year membership at Melkweg, which gives us access to free shows monthly. Some of those shows are the best I’ve ever seen, no joke.
BEER loves FOOD is very conveniently located a 2 minutes walk from Melkweg. After a great show, we stopped for some more beers and a decent dinner. BEER loves FOOD ‘s focus is still on beer, with more than 30 beers on tap. There’s a strong focus on Brewdog, and the bistro is an official “dealer” for them.
The place is small and has a very relaxed vibe, which is always nice to find at a 2 minute walk from hectic Leidseplein. If you’re lucky, you can get a window seat and people watch while enjoying your special beers and food.
Alright, on to food, cause this ain’t Drink And Tell – although I’d be pretty good at that too [buys new domain].
The prices are a bit on the high-ish side for what the meals sound like, in my opinion. On the bright side, all their dishes are the same price: 15.50 EUR. No need to make a choice based on money, just pick your favorite. The menu isn’t very large, but I’m confident everyone can find something they fancy.
I went for the Chilaquiles, as I was on a bit of a Mexican roll that week. The chicken was as real as it comes, as I had to take out some cartilage and other parts I’d rather not eat. While that doesn’t sound great, it’s actually a good sign. It’s cooked in beer (figure) and spiced. Could I really tell that? No, but I did like the end result.
The dips were alright, nothing special, but not enough for all the chips – had to scrape towards the end of the meal. Sad times. The salsa was my favorite. Nachos were proper, and not Cheese Doritos or other great typical Amsterdam substitutes.
A good dish, however this should not cost 15.50 EUR. Considering that the week before I had truffle pasta for 16 EUR at Casa Di David, this seems a bit ridiculous.
Hayden had the Highlander Burger which he enjoyed, that comes with fries and a salad. Sounds more proper for the price. I wish I could give you a piece by piece, bite by bite review here, but in all honesty he was starving and that burger was gone before I looked twice. I had a bite and was satisfied too. Not a mind blowing burger, but a good one. I did appreciate the real buns, which were not too soft.
I’d recommend BEER loves FOOD if you’re around Leidseplein, looking for a quiet spot with good beer and more than basic food. The staff is very nice and happy to help you with your choices. They also let us hang out there around closing time, and didn’t even mention it before we realized it ourselves. Cheers guys!
If you love beer and food, good spot – give it a go.
